Status of the "Women's Empowerment" project Kariba Zimbabwe in August 2023

Thanks to the credit from the Jansen PrimeSteps Foundation, the project was able to gain momentum at the end of March and got off to a good start. In the presence of Jean Theiler, the unfortunately somewhat worn-out premises were rented, renovated and furnished for our purpose. The space for chicken breeding was also set up and equipped. Interviews were conducted with the women in need of support and the planned collaboration was agreed.

The eleven women selected for the project receive USD 20 per month for transportation and personal hygiene items.

In the meantime, they have started to bake and sell muffins, scones and samosas under the guidance of a restaurant chef. For the time being, the border crossing to Zambia is being used as a sales outlet.

Chicken fattening was also started under the supervision of an experienced woman. As egg production proved to be too costly in the initial phase, we opted for chicken fattening. The first flock of chickens has already been sold. The proceeds were used to purchase a further 50 freshly hatched chicks. For the time being, we do not want to work with too large a flock so that the risk of unwanted losses remains low. It has been shown, for example, that chicks die if the night is cool and the following day is very hot. We are now trying to compensate for this better with more targeted use of the heat lamps at night.

Twice a week, a tailor comes by to give the women instructions for textile work such as colored cloth handbags and reusable cloth tampons. Three sewing machines are used for this purpose.

Since the first of June, two qualified teachers have been giving daily lessons in English, mathematics, hygiene and other areas that are important for daily life. They also supervise the practical activities. Some of the young women who have left school early struggle with reading and writing in English. They receive intensive lessons in basics. The young women are in good spirits and motivated.

Training in nail cosmetics and hair styling is planned.

According to feedback, the women receiving support are doing well and are very satisfied with the project. The support staff are motivated.
